DEPARTMENT OF ANIMAL BREEDING AND GENETICS

                Preamble

The Department of Animal Breeding and Genetics was established in 1989 at the inception of University of Agriculture, Abeokuta as an entirely new concept in the Nigerian University System.  It constitutes one of the five Departments currently run by the College of Animal Science and Livestock Production (COLANIM) and offers sound and accredited programmes.

The Department runs a Postgraduate Diploma programme, Master of Agriculture and Doctorate degrees with options in:

Animal Breeding and Genetics, and Animal Biotechnology.

 

                Philosophy

The primary philosophy that guides the training of students in the Department of Animal Breeding and Genetics is the production of skilled manpower that is adequately furnished with comprehensive information required for breeding and improvement of existing livestock in an environment endowed with large population of different livestock species. Such professional manpower has to be produced in an atmosphere with the widest possible human and material resources through the adoption of effective techniques of instruction and exposure to the actual practice of animal breeding and improvement techniques. Consequently, there are opportunities for formal training at the postgraduate levels for the acquisition of basic and higher degrees in the options listed above. The Department mounts programmes through classroom instruction, laboratory practical, field demonstration and workshop practice.

 

                Objectives of the programme

- To produce skilled manpower that is adequately furnished with comprehensive information required for breeding, improvement and maintenance of existing animal genetic resources.

- To produce high level manpower with entrepreneurial skills for self-employment, leadership and service in a competitive world.

- To develop new patterns of livestock structures and government policies which clearly demonstrate that livestock production is an important part of our national economy.

(c)           Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D)

Structure

Candidates that do not have basic background of Animal Breeding and Genetics and Animal Biotechnology are to register for prescribed core courses and pass well before they could commence their research works.

 

                Departmental Postgraduate Committee

Membership: Departmental postgraduate committee includes Lecturer I, Senior Lecturers, Readers and Professors in the Department and the Head of Department is the Chairman of the Committee. Member of Postgraduate committee must be a holder of Ph.D. degree.

 

Functions:

To coordinate all postgraduate activities as it relates to the Department 

To advise the postgraduate students appropriately

(iii)      To supervise all postgraduate research works and direct students when need arises. 

 

                General Admission Requirements

 

(a)          Postgraduate Diploma Programme

In addition to the five credits in relevant subjects at the Ordinary Level, candidates for PGD programmes of the Department are to meet the University requirements for admission into the postgraduate programme. Candidates with Second Class Lower Division (CGPA < 3.00) are preferred. Candidates with Third Class Division will also be considered for admission.

 

(b)          Masters Programme

In addition to the five credits in relevant subjects at the Ordinary Level, candidates for M. Agric. programmes of the Department are to meet the University requirements for admission into the postgraduate programme. Candidates with First Class and Second Class Upper Division are preferred. Candidates with Second Class Lower Division and with CGPA of not less than 3.00 will also be considered for admission.

 

(c)           Doctorate Programme

Candidates that have successfully completed M. Sc., M. Agric. in Animal Breeding and Genetics or closely related disciplines in recognized Universities within and outside Nigeria and are eligible to proceed to Ph.D. (with 60% and above) will be considered for admission.

All candidates must have their five credits in relevant subjects.

               

                 Duration of Programme

PGD programme shall normally be for a period of one academic session for full time and two academic sessions for part time. M. Agric. programme shall normally be for a period of two academic sessions (four semesters) for full time and three academic sessions (six semesters) for part time registrations. The full time Ph.D Programme is for three academic sessions (six semesters); the minimum duration shall be eight semesters for part time registration.

(A)          PGD programme in Poultry Breeding and Hatchery Technology

ABG 701:  Poultry Genetic Resources     -                              3 units

The chicken chromosomes (micro-and macro-), interactions of genes, sex-linked traits, sex-limited traits.

 

ABG 702:   Genetic Improvement of poultry species -     2 units

Quantitative and qualitative characters of the poultry species, breeding and selection in poultry, lethality.

 

 


ABG 703:  Principles of Animal Breeding               -                              3 units

Introduction to genetic principles, additive gene action, heritability, repeatability, selection, crossbreeding, inbreeding, controlled breeding.

 

ABG 704:    Artificial Insemination and Pedigree Hatching -         3 units                  

Physiology of reproduction in poultry species, the reproductive system of the cock, the reproductive system of the hen, introduction to embryo transfer, characteristics of the cock semen, semen production, semen quality and semen evaluation, artificial insemination in the poultry (theory and practicals), egg identification, pedigree eggs, handling of pedigree eggs, pedigree hatching, chick identification, pedigree rearing               

 

ABG 705:   Local breeds of poultry                            -                              2 units

Adaptive features of indigenous poultry species, productive potentials of indigenous poultry species, conservation needs of rare/indigenous breeds of poultry in Nigeria, major genes and their roles in local poultry breeds.

 

ABG 706:   Poultry Feeds and Feeding                    -                              2 units

Feed nutrients, water in relation to nutrition, nutrient requirements and feeding standards, measurement of nutrient utilization: growth trials, digestion trials, feeding poultry for enhanced fertility, locally-available feedstuffs for poultry, ration formulation for poultry, instrumentation in nutrition research, nutritional disorders

 

ANS 701:    Computer Applications in Animal Production -            2 units

Introduction to the computer: Hardware, software, peripherals, operating systems, Microsoft office suite, statistical and database packages, introduction to the internet: wired LAN, wireless LAN, browsers, virtual libraries, other on-line resources and their uses, livestock farm management software. World trade in animal products and services.

 

ABG 709:    Concepts of layer and broiler breeding     -                    2 units

Selection methods in poultry breeding, poultry gene pool and economic genes, foundation stock establishment.

               

ABG 710:   Hatchery Management (and practicals) -                        3 units

Hatchery management for enhanced hatchability, hatchery location, hatching flock, flock health, mating ratio, egg, collection, loading and transportation, fumigation, selection and cleaning, storage, incubators: structures, incubator preparation, egg hatching, pedigree hatching.

 

ABG 711:   Poultry Management                                               -              3 units

Managing a poultry farm for egg production, managing a poultry farm for broiler production, managing a parent stock/grandparent stock farm, poultry behaviour and management, haematology and blood chemistry.

 

ABG 717:    Basic Statistics for Diploma students -                             2 units

Basic principles of statistics, planning an experiment, attributes of population and sampling, measures of central tendency, measures of dispersion, measures of association, student t, analyses of variance, presentation of data: tabulation and graphs etc.

ABG 801:  Introduction to Biotechnology and Animal Genetics (2 Units)

Cytology, Genes/chromosomes: structures and functions, Role of genes in animal genetics, Quantitative heredity, Basic Mendelian genetics and molecular basis of inheritance.

 

ABG 802:  Animal Breeding Theory and Programme Design (3 Units)

Theoretical basis of animal improvement programmes, Population structure, Design of breeding programmes and repeated measurements. Variance components, Heritability and Repeatability estimates), Performance and progeny testing, Generation intervals, Dissemination of improvement, Genes and genotype X environmental interaction.  (Prediction of breeding values, selection indices, Best Linear Unbiased Prediction), Breed evaluation. Tutorials:  Problems and applications are discussed in tutorial sessions.

 

ABG 803:  Quantitative Genetics (3 Units)

Genetic and phenotypic variations, Genetic basis of quantitative traits, Sampling from small populations, means and variances, Resemblance between relatives, Heritability and repeatability, Selection response and its prediction. Threshold characters, Correlation among traits.  Selection in long and short term, Selection response and its prediction, Inbreeding, Crossbreeding and selection for crossing ability.  Design and analysis of selection experiments.  Inbreeding depression and heterosis, genetic conservation.

Tutorials:  Problems and applications are discussed in tutorials sessions.

 

ABG 804:  Stock Improvement (3 Units)

Review of genetic basis and interrelationship of economically important traits in each of the principal livestock species. Breeding objectives, Development of breeding plans, Breeding and selection programmes in practice for different livestock species, Lethality, Foundation stock establishment, Visiting of livestock breeding and research enterprises.

 

ABG 805:  Population Genetics (2 Units)

Genetic structure of populations, Gene frequencies and changes in frequency, Darwin evolution, Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, Variation/evolutionary changes, sources/forces of variation and evolutionary changes, Effects of sexual reproduction on variation, Variability among finite populations, synthesis of forces,  Balanced polymorphism, Random events, Fitness, origin of species.

 

ABG 806:  Advanced Biotechnology (3 Units)

Animal cell and tissue culture, Maturation of oocytes, In Vitro oocytes fusion, Cloning and genetic engineering, species hybridization interspecies embryo transfer, DNA sequences, blood group analysis and genetic polymorphism, electrophoretic techniques, Genes and genetic markers.  Linkage mapping by recombination. Mapping and map distances, Chi-square test, mitotic segregation and recombination, analysis of single meiosis, sex chromosome and sex linkages.

 

ABG 807:  Biostatistics (3 Units)

Planning of experiments, Importance of designing experiments, Increasing accuracy of experiments, Comparing means: t-test, F-test, Analysis of covariance, Correlation and Regression, Experimental designs (Complete Randomized Design, Randomized Completely Block Design, Incomplete block, Latin Squares, Qasi-Latin squares, Incomplete Latin squares, Factorial, Split plots, Split-split plots, missing data, Confounding effects, mixed model and least squares analyses.Tutorial:  Analyses of results of series of experiments. Analyses of animal production and breeding data and use of some statistical packages.

 

ABG 808:  Molecular Genetics (2 Units)

Chromosome structure and functions, Chromosomal changes and duplication (aneuploidy, polyploidy etc), Sequence organizations, Restriction enzymes and restriction analyses, Cloning and genetic engineering, Formation of recombinant DNA and recombinant DNA methodology/techniques. DNA assays, Polygenic reconstruction and estimations, Speciation and hybridization, Identification of disease/useful genes.

 

ABG 809: Advanced Biochemical Genetics (3 Units)

DNA structure and replication, Types of gene action, Biochemical basis of gene action, Genetic control of metabolism, The genetic code, Mutation and Mutational site, Inversion sequence and transposes, Molecular basis of mutation, Spontaneous, induced and eversion mutation analysis, Mutagens and carcinogens, Biological repair mechanisms, Protein synthesis, Gene splicing, Genetics of diseases resistance and feed utilization, Errors of metabolism, Resistance and control of parasite and pathogens.

 

ABG 810:  Developmental Genetics (3 Units)

Cell totipotency, Establishment of basic animal body plan, Mutational and molecular analysis of basic body plan, Proteins as determinants of cellular characteristics, Regulation of protein synthesis, Application of regulatory mechanism to cell differentiation. Transcription regulation by tissue specific enhancers, Transcript processing and tissue specific regulation, Cancer as a developmental genetic disease, Genetics of farm animal behaviour.

 

ABG 811:  Immunogenetics (2 Units)

Monoclonal antibodies in selective breeding, Antigens, Immune systems, (Immunoglobulins, Major Histocompatibility complex, Human Leukocyte Antigens).  Genetics regulation of immune systems, genetics of disease resistance and screening of genetic diseases, Immuno-deficiencies.

 

 

                 General Graduation Requirements

 

All students for PGD, M. Agric. and Ph.D. programmes are to register for all the compulsory and core courses, the required electives, seminars and Dissertations/Thesis and passed all before they could obtain the postgraduate degree certificates of the University.

 

(a)          Postgraduate Diploma

General graduation requirements applied to PGD programme. Required courses are earlier started.

 

 

 

 

(b)          Master Programme

 

i. General graduation requirements applied to all M. Agric. options. Required courses are earlier started. Course work is on semester basis.

 

ii. Seminar: Candidates are to present two seminars (pre and post data seminars)

 

iii. Research Study and Thesis presentation:  Independent well research works are to be carried out by all postgraduate students and they are to present results of their investigations during post data seminars. After presentation and necessary corrections effected, candidates will present their final dissertation/Thesis at the Postgraduate School in presence of well-constituted examination panels by the PG School.

 

iv. Open Thesis Defense

Candidates for M. Agric./Ph.D. will be allowed once to defend their dissertations/thesis in presence of Examination Panel. Members of the Panel shall include the Chairman and who shall be Head of Department, the Major Supervisor, Co-Supervisor(s), the PG School Representative and the appointed External Examiner. Open thesis defense shall normally be carried out at the designated venues within the PG School building.  Reports of the Examination Panel are to be made available to the PG School using the required forms and signed by all parties involved within the shortest time possible. 

 

(c)           Doctor of Philosophy Degree

General information in (b) above also applied to Doctoral Degree Programme.

 

(d)          Postgraduate Research Benchmark

 

Master Programme

 

Minimum duration of bench/field work should be 6 months.

Research study should have a minimum of 3 clear objectives.

Research work should include a field and or laboratory component.

Research work must have the potentials of generating at least one journal publication.

 

 

Doctorate Programme

Minimum duration of bench/field work should be 12 months.

Research should have a minimum of 5 clear objectives.

Research work should include a field and or laboratory component.

Research shall employ at least one modern laboratory technique such as molecular biology studies.

Research must have the potentials of generating at least two journal publications
